We stopped off at one of our bucket list stays, Rowley Farm Holidays. Any dog owner with a close proximity to Instagram will have heard about this place, but in case you haven’t, or maybe you have and need that extra push to book, I’m going to tell you about our time and will no doubt have you sold…
It’s no secret that there is something truly magical about the English countryside. Rowley Farm Holidays is a fairly rural working farm in Worcestershire, only a stone’s throw from the Cotswolds. From their three cosy cottages to their lovely shepherds’ hut, there is somewhere for everybody… particularly people travelling with dogs.
We stayed in The Hideaway Hut, which is at the far end of the site, looking out over golden fields and grazing sheep. Don’t be fooled by it being a ‘Hut’ because one thing you are not short of is space. We had plenty of stretching room in this self-contained tiny home, with a spacious bathroom/ wet room, a fully equipped kitchen area, a cosy sofa in front of a log burner, and a lovely big squishy bed. We were pleased with the storage space, allowing us to stash away our bags and truly settle in.
We knew our stay would be beyond comfortable, but what warmed our welcome further was the thoughtful hamper left for us on arrival. With juice made on the farm (now I need 10 bottles please!), delicious fudge, a bottle of cider, and some scrummy crisps – all sourced locally, perfectly in line with their ethos and went down a treat!
No matter how welcome we feel as people, what tells us what sort of people run accommodation is how they receive pets. And this is, in my opinion, the reason why people can’t stop speaking about this place. I don’t say this lightly, but of the many areas we have been lucky enough to visit, Rowley is one of the most dog-friendly places we have and will ever visit. You can tell that thought, care, and consideration have been paid to their furry guests.
You can expect a jar of treats for your dog to snack on during their stay, clean and comfy blankets so they can cosy up on the bed with you, bowls (dogs have needs too!) and saving the best for last, a large, completely enclosed garden for them to enjoy. Is it really a holiday when you still have to have eyes in the back of your head the whole time? Whilst we dog owners have our default vigilance, it was a break I didn’t realise I needed to be able to let Mellow explore and sniff around, knowing she’s safe.
That meant we could soak in the stunning wood-fired hottub, sinking in with a long ‘ahhhhhhhh’ whilst Mellow could crack on with squirrel patrol, stress free… what a life!
Outside, we humans had everything we needed for a truly relaxing stay. Swinging idly in an egg chair, watching the sun set with a book in hand, or dipping a toe in the tub under the starry sky, we realised that THIS is what a countryside escape is. No plans, no interruptions, just quiet and slow moments with you and your loved ones. And sometimes it’s the simple moments that are the most memorable, whether it’s a BBQ in the sun, keeping an eye on the sausages that Mellow has caught sight of, or enjoying a picnic on the grass.
Our summer stay in the Hideaway Hut allowed us to spend precious quality time together, and enriching our lives with time spent at such places is so important to us. Flicking through the booklet of messages left for the hosts, I saw many felt the same way. It was truly wholesome seeing each family had had just a special time like us, with a little paw drawn after their dog’s name.
